National Gas Transmission (NGT) has an exciting and important role in net zero and in leading a fair energy transition for the UK. We will do this by developing the green gas system of tomorrow, while delivering the natural gas needs of today.

As our new consents lead you will develop, manage and lead a team of Consent Officers, using your technical ability in planning, consenting and project management to deliver a high quality economic consenting, and environmental assessment service to secure the required consents for NGT NetZero Projects.

Job Purpose

•    Lead and manage the relevant consenting process and work with the other team disciplines such as legal, land, engineering and stakeholder management to secure consent and maintain compliance post award.

•    Provide excellent technical consents strategy guidance and support, reporting directly to the Project Director, Senior Management team, and disciplinary leads.Manage the DCO, TCP(S)A, Pipelines Act process and associated workstreams to obtain planning consents for projects.

•    Lead, manage and coordinate the environmental assessment process.

•    Clarify and relay all Consents risks to Project program, together with proposed mitigations, to the Project Director and/or Senior Management team, immediately; and once agreed, effectively and successfully implement those mitigations.

•    Work with the External Affairs lead to develop, lead and manage engagement strategies for strategic stakeholder relationships acting as the key interface between external/internal teams/persons.

•    Give evidence as an expert witness at DCO hearings, public inquiries etc. and coach and mentor other Consents Officers to give evidence.

•    Manage consents and environmental consultants related to the project consenting process, including the proactive management of external supplier resourcing and finances.

About You

•    Highly motivated individual with an excellent in-depth knowledge of the UK planning system, as well as practical experience of successfully delivering consents and related assessments on complex infrastructure schemes.

•    Experience in the delivery of consents and EIA related activities in support of DCO, major and complex multi- site projects  to program, cost and specification.

•    Proven track record of consenting Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, ideally with experience across all stages of the project lifecycle from option development through to onsite delivery. You will understand the differing challenges each project phase can bring and how to overcome them.

•    Excellent communication skills and experience of working with a range of key consenting stakeholders, building strong and effective relationships to support successful resolution of challenges.

•    Proven ability to negotiate with a wide range of external stakeholders from individual members of the public, landowners, commercial establishments, contractors, developers. Managing often conflicting objectives.


•    Experienced in managing complex programmes and project budgets. Always willing to challenge ways of working, you’ll enjoy seeking and delivering efficiencies to reduce project consenting costs.

•    Ability to work collaboratively across the wider business representing the Consents discipline, at the most senior levels, to support and achieve project delivery.
