Senior Sustainability Consultant

West London

A global architectural design firm who specialise in sports facilities, arenas and convention centres are looking for a Senior Sustainability Consultant to join and help grow their team.

As a business they have designed and delivered some of the world's most memorable civic, sports and entertainment buildings, from iconic stadia to ground-breaking live music venues.

They're a global specialised design firm with local offices across America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, allowing them to offer the resources and impact of the design giants and the tightly knit atmosphere and growth opportunities of smaller firms.

As a Senior Sustainability Consultant, you will play a crucial role in working with their region leader to implement sustainability strategies across their projects and their business. Your focus will be on integrating environmental, social, and economic sustainability principles into their architectural designs, and ensuring their commitment to creating environmentally responsible and efficient structures on a trajectory to deliver zero carbon projects and ensure their operating target of Net Zero emissions is achieved by 2030.

For this role you will ideally come from an architecture or engineering building physics background with experience using software's such as IES and experience working on large scale commercial or hospitality projects.

What Your Day Could Consist Of:

  • Working with the regional sustainability leader to provide sustainability thought leadership within the firm and larger profession.
  • Guide teams of engineers and architects to deliver high performance (zero carbon, zero energy) projects.
  • Support their desire to measure and track their carbon footprint, then reduce and offset, towards Carbon Neutral operations.
  • Generate novel ideas to mitigate climate change through their practice, support in conducting research, share findings with the firm, and at national conferences. Implement onto real-world projects.
  • Essentially be an in-house sustainability leader, expert, and resource, particularly very early in the project design and development process - often utilising multiple building performance modelling tools.

The Business

  • Support the regional leader in the growth of a sustainability advisory team as a source of revenue for the practice, while utilising architectural, interior, landscape, and brand activation teams, talent + recruiting/training key members of staff across all teams.
  • Support the practice of sustainability external engagement while working with the EMEA Head of Sustainability, the Board of Directors for the EMEA region and Marketing teams.
  • Identify key areas of research and lead in-house execution, as well as external partnerships and marketing.
  • Author publications with the aim of popularizing all sustainability-focused achievements of the practice.
  • Set achievable internal goals, create tools and guidelines along the path to (net) zero carbon.

Projects

  • Work with project teams' sustainability champions to review project sustainability goals.
  • Drive and influence the future sustainability trends associated with their building typologies.
  • Lead sustainability advisory projects.
  • Form and lead a team undertaking formal sustainability reviews of all major projects at all AIA defined project design stages.
  • Lead sustainability research, driving live project research, environmental analysis, and design workflows. Research group members to take active design role in all major projects from competition to late design stages.
  • Create a network of external consultants to be brought in where in-house capabilities are insufficient.
  • Track and report project pursuits relative to sustainability for marketing.
  • Oversee the quality of all evidence submitted for LEED and other similar environmental ratings and assessments.
  • Oversee the creation of a sustainability best-practice design guide for each relevant, major building type.
  • Work with project teams to align projects along the path to LEED or other sustainability rating certifications.

People

  • Provide sustainability education, specific to the range of roles and seniority levels across the practice, strategically aligned with project requirements and client pursuits.
  • Develop and deliver a process for internal knowledge exchange and staff enrolment in external educational courses.
  • Identify R&D streams, both undergoing or future, to be investigated further, resourced, shared internally and externally.

Requirements For Success:

  • Strong understanding of sustainability certifications, regulations, and green building standards.
  • Clear understanding of how to achieve and deliver 'decarbonisation' in projects and the reasons for it.
  • Proficiency in sustainability assessment tools and software (e.g., energy modelling, embodied carbon assessment, life cycle assessment).
  • Experience working on LEED or other green building certification projects.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy systems and their integration into building design.
  • Project management experience, overseeing sustainability aspects within architectural projects.
  • Passionate about environmental stewardship and sustainable design.
  • Analytical mindset with a strategic approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong leadership capabilities to guide teams and influence decision-making.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in architecture, sustainability, environmental design, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in architecture, with a focus on sustainability initiatives and practices.
  • A strong and proven track record of leading the sustainability agenda, and of driving 'tangible' change.
  • A background in creative environmental design (not necessarily architecture, but involvement in creative thinking).
  • Experience working in the role of sustainability leadership.
  • Understanding of various environmental analysis tools, ability to interpret results for 'design' personnel.
  • Experience in eQuest, EnergyPlus, EnergyPro, TRACE 3D Plus, IESVE, LBNL Window, Sketchup, Rhino, Grasshopper, cove.tool or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to engage with clients, project teams, and stakeholders effectively.
