What will the successful candidate be doing:

We’re looking for a Senior Physicist to work in the Sellafield Radiometric Systems Group (RSG), Characterisation team. The role holder will provide specialist nuclear physics support across a range of radiometric Characterisation Projects and to Nuclear Material Assay (NMA) operations across the site. The role holder will also provide Intelligent Customer (IC) oversight of radiometric physics activities performed by the supply chain and contribute to the delivery of radiometric characterisation technology development projects.

Characterisation projects utilise portable specialist assay equipment that can be deployed in-situ to allow delivery of complex radiological characterisation services. NMA systems provide accurate measurement and quantification of radioactive materials and utilise a wide range of radiometric physics techniques.

For nominated Characterisation projects the Senior Radiometric Physicist will:

• Provide the appropriate specialist physics knowledge required to deliver all technical elements of the project to appropriate quality requirements.
• Lead project delivery and provide technical oversight of team activities to ensure delivery within safety, quality, time and cost constraints.
• Provide specialist radiometric physics knowledge to allow the most appropriate radiometric characterisation solution to be determined.
• Develop detailed task specifications, calibration philosophies and measurement plans and ensure that specialist equipment has been appropriately calibrated and tested to confirm satisfactory performance.
• Perform detailed data analysis and interpretation of acquired radiometric data.
• Produce technical reports and perform independent check of technical reports produced by other radiometric physics personnel.
• Deliver an IC assurance role to ensure radiometric physics work scope (technical reports, spreadsheets and mathematical models) delivered by contractors are technically correct and delivered to the appropriate levels of safety and quality.

For Nuclear Material Assay support the Senior Radiometric Physicist will:

• Provide radiometric physics support to nominated Sellafield operating facilities to ensure continued satisfactory operation of their NMA assay systems.
• Ensure that NMA systems have been appropriately calibrated and tested to confirm satisfactory performance.
• Provide radiometric physics support to the investigation of NMA operational issues and equipment failures.
• Provide radiometric physics support to the introduction of new NMA equipment to the Sellafield site. This support is normally provided during the specification, development, testing and commissioning phases for new instrumentation.

For Technology Development projects the radiometric physicist will:

• Provide expert radiometric physics advice to characterisation technology development projects.
• Review new emerging characterisation techniques/technologies.
• Support SL Active Demonstrator projects which utilise radiometric equipment or techniques.

The Ideal Candidate:

Essential Skills

• A degree in Physics or a related STEM discipline.
• Strong analytical skills that can be used to analyse complex data sets using commercially available software tools and self-developed mathematical models/spreadsheets.
• Excellent technical report writing skills.
• Strong customer facing skills with the ability to communicate technical work scope verbally in a confident and authoritative manner to a range of stakeholders at all levels.
• Good team working and interpersonal networking skills.
• Able to specify and manage technical work scope delivered by a subcontractor.

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge and application of nuclear modelling software packages e.g. Monte Carlo N Particle (MCNP).
• Development of complex spreadsheet analysis tools and associated VBA macros.
• Experience of deploying radiation measurement equipment on plant.
• Plant knowledge/experience.
