For our client, international automotive powertrain components production, design, and supply company with headquarters in Germany, we are looking for a person for the position of Principal Engineer - Battery Systems. Employing nearly 900 people, among multiple offices around Europe, they provide support for projects across all vehicle sectors:
  • System supplier for complete automotive powertrain systems.
  • Full electrical and mechanical capability from clean sheet through to quality accredited production.
  • Specific sites setup to support a lot of the global OEMs.

The person in this position will join the business at the Warwick office and report to the Head of Battery Systems. The company appreciates broad experience of automotive electrical systems and their development for production particularly e-powertrain solutions and their associated power electronics and energy storage systems. The key functions of the role:

  • Experience in the development, characterisation, simulation and testing of lithium-ion cells, modules, and traction batteries
  • Basic knowledge of chemical behaviour and physical construction of lithium-ion battery cells
  • Manage the capture and development of the customer's battery system requirements and specifications, ensuring alignment between internal team(s) and the customer.
  • Act as technical lead for battery development projects - utilising cross functional electrical, software and mechanical skill base in order to deliver customer projects to a high standard.
  • Support business development team by providing technical insight for battery related discussions and quotations.
  • Specification and commissioning of battery test facilities and lead validation activity of battery cells, modules, and packs.
  • Coordinate collaboration with, including travel to other company entities and external battery specialists in order to co-ordinate design activities and ensure delivery is in line with the programme requirements.
  • Lead system and component-level safety case development, and follow industry standard techniques to ensure a robust design, e.g., FMEA. Qualifications / Education / Experience required:
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant Engineering or Science related discipline.
  • A minimum of 10 years' demonstrable experience in an automotive or similar engineering environment, with a focus on EV and hybrid vehicle technologies.
  • Proven experience of working on automotive HV battery systems and battery management systems and understanding their interfaces and integration into the vehicle.
  • Experience in engineering for volume production.
  • Able to demonstrate detailed understanding of the complex mechanical, thermal, and electrical interrelations of a battery system.
  • Working understanding of automotive HV standards design methodologies and working practices.
  • An appreciation of Functional Safety processes and concepts.
  • Verifiable experience in System Specification Requirements Capture/Management and Design Validation processes.
  • Confident user of MS Office products and competent user of industry-standard software. Other beneficial attributes:
  • Strong theoretical knowledge of the behaviour and appropriate control of batteries on cell, module and pack level.
  • Ability to read electrical component schematics.
  • Experience of delivering high-ASIL systems into production applications and a detailed understanding of ISO26262.
  • Knowledge of German or other European languages. Personal attributes:

  • Highly self-motivated and independent, with a willingness to seek guidance and involve others whenever required.
