Job Description

Full Stack Developer

Contract Term: 6 Months

Contracting Authority: The Home Office

Location: Remote - Manchester (Occasional Travel)

The "Animals in Scientific Procedures e-Licensing" (ASPeL) service allows establishments to apply for and manage the licences required to carry out research, in the name of science, in Great Britain, on protected animals. It allows the Home Office to assess and process these applications and carry out other necessary regulatory duties.

The ASPeL product is in active development by a cross-functional team. A family of feature-complete correspondence products exists (CS systems). Live support and maintenance will be needed intermittently:

  • "Digital External Correspondence System" (DECS)
  • "Home Office Correspondence System" (HOCS Alfresco) - precursor of DECS
  • "Windrush Compensation System" (WCS) - derived from HOCS

All these systems currently run within the "Application Container Platform" an AWS/Kubernetes environment managed within the Home Office.

The team's delivery manager will decide priorities of work across these products and systems as required.

As a Full Stack Developer your main responsibilities will be:

  • Live support and maintenance of ASPeL and "correspondence systems" within Service Level Agreement. Supported hours are Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.
  • Collaboration within the cross-functional team to deliver value increments from the ASPeL product backlog: design, implementation, documentation, quality assurance (reviews, developer tests, advocacy of good/best practices, compliance with standards), evergreening, deployment.
  • Knowledge transfer to future new team members.
  • Maintenance of environment and infrastructure artefacts that are within the team's responsibility (CI/CD configurations, automated test suites, deployment descriptors, Kubernetes configurations).
  • Specification of service desk requests for AWS service configurations etc, to managed platform engineers where change implementation is outside the team's direct responsibility.

You'll have relevant experience in:

  • Node.js
  • React.js
  • Experience in developing with React and Node, using past and current good practices (State with Redux, Classes, Hooks), unit testing and modularisation.
  • Strong Java skills particularly for supporting and maintaining systems, including dependency upgrades.
  • Ability to independently understand and work within complex systems in the JavaScript ecosystem.
  • Experience with Java, particularly for supporting and maintaining Java-SpringBoot systems, to ensure a well-rounded skill set within the team.
  • Demonstrated experience in working on complex systems that have limited documentation.
  • Mocha / Jest.
  • PostgreSQL.
  • Git.

SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be eligible and willing to undergo these checks
