Job Description


  • We are seeking an experienced plant and vehicle mechanic/workshop manager with extensive knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, to work with a small pool of fitters to enhance and develop current workshop practices in order to support and maintain an ever-increasing technical pool of plant and vehicles.
  • This is very much a hands-on role and involves working in a challenging working environment that needs significant development and improvement.

Main Duties

  • Supervision and administration in everyday duties including but not limited to vehicle data management on MAXIMO, vehicle allocation, maintenance, servicing, fault finding and repair, workshop housekeeping, tool and equipment control, total fleet management.

  • To contribute to effective contract performance by working closely with the Plant & Transport Team to deliver the company strategies in order to achieve the business objectives in servicing and operating the MoD Core Plant including electric cars and client welfare vehicles.

  • Work collaboratively with Air Head MTMS and MT Supervisors to ensure both sections work effectively and support each other.

  • This role includes vehicle allocation, use and activity support.

  • Ensure effective vehicle maintenance regime is in place aligned with manufacturer's recommendations.

What we are looking for

  • Use online technical publications to support and maintain the fleet serviceability at all times including creating demands for spares and replacement parts from such documents and associated publications.

  • Ensure all diagnostic equipment is maintained and configured for use on the core plant fleet.

  • Engage with specialist support agencies to resolve technical issues.

  • Manage the team-training programme including TBT to ensure all employees maintain adequate skills for their duties, in particular supporting new pieces of plant and equipment.

  • Work closely with the stores team for ordering and ensuring adequate stocks of spares are maintained.

  • Report monthly on Plant and transport condition for life cycle replacement, vehicle mileage, usage and availability. Undertake random checks on vehicle users and husbandry.

  • Working closely with management, provide vehicle support for the delivery activities including visits.

  • Jointly with Air Head MT Supervisor, manage the allocation of the client welfare vehicles.

  • Carry out MOT annual inspections as required by AIG law.

  • Request work orders from the Helpdesk facility for vehicle and plant defects, updating MAXIMO as required.

  • Follow and implement strong QSHE practices throughout all activities and facilities, working closely with the QSHE Manager as required.

  • Support management and other sections in preparing cast vehicles for back loading and disposal.

  • Working with the QSHE Team, maintain a register by plant type of trained operator including sub-contractors.

  • Prioritise repairs and servicing to ensure maximum levels of plant and vehicle availability.

  • Undertake annual and mid-term team performance reviews as required by the company policies.

  • Must have a minimum of 10 Years' experience and knowledge in vehicle workshop management regimes.

  • Person Specification
  • Formal qualification(s) in vehicle servicing, maintenance and workshop management.
  • Essential to be trained on and have a good working knowledge of a range of diagnostic equipment.

  • Full range of driving qualifications including HGV, crane desirable but not essential.

  • Able to prioritise workload to meet a demanding environment.

  • Self-motivated with ability to work independent or as part of the team.

  • Will build and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and customers at all levels.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • High level of computer skills in Microsoft office. E-days & MAXIMO desirable but not essential.

  • Be prepared to work in an underdeveloped and limited facility workshop with a view to enhance and improve.

  • Willing to develop personal and team skills in order to operate and maintain the MOD core plant fleet.
